I am now fairly certain that I will teach levels 2-4 in the morning and at night. This is good for me, because I can plan better knowing I'll be teaching the same levels. Also, I'm happy that I will be accompanying some of my level 1 students as they move up to level 2.
In my last post I posed some questions to myself about how my classes went this past semester. The first question, "How did it go?" is really hard to answer in a few words, but I'll try.
It went fairly well. There were several challenges and things that I could improve, (more about those later) but the students that stuck with it all made significant progress. I always find that whatever I thought were reasonable goals, only about 75% are actually reached.
This has been a strange school year for many different reasons, personal and professional. It was my second full year teaching ESL and I guess the honeymoon is over.
I'm struggling to adjust my expectations from those I had when I was teaching Adult Basic Ed. and Speech. I really miss being able to talk at length and feel confident that my students understood most of what I said. In many ways, I enjoy ESL more because the students are so enthusiastic.
Next time, question #2 - What challenges did I face?
